AIZAWL: The Israeli army is a coveted option because most Bnei Menashes work in private enterprises, basically as low-class labour requiring more brawn than brain. Describing his skirmish over an Internet chat from Israel, Hangshing said it was not his first battle experience. Before he joined the Israeli army, he had to fight hard to enter the country.
"I had to fight to come to Israel. Now, I have to fight for the country,"said the 22-year-old paratrooper.
Others like Esther Khawlhring are doing pretty well. Khawlhring runs a small beauty parlour in Gush Kaif. Her new-found status does not 'allow' her to look back to India. "There, we were poorer than the middle-class. Here, we are no better, but the money keeps pouring in,"she said. Avior Khawlhring and his family were in the latest batch of converts to travel to the Promised Land.
